Abu Naji remembered your Téta’s seat. And this morning, one tiny teacher has a plan to make this place yours, one object at a time.

شو هيدا؟

شو هيدا؟ — what's this? · shu hayda?

That’s your go-to question for pointing at something near you: شو هيدا؟. Say it like you’re genuinely curious. Two parts: شو — what; هيدا — this (masculine form). In Beirut, you’ll hear hayda with a soft h, not a hard h. Common mistake? Don’t stretch the u — it’s quick: شو هيدا؟. Say it with me: شو هيدا؟

Again, a little slower: شو… هيدا؟. Now natural, curious: شو هيدا؟. Point to the cup and ask Lili.

Great: هيدا كتاب — hayda for masculine words like كتاب (book). And هيدي طاولة — haydi for feminine words like طاولة (table). Feel the tiny switch: دا vs دي. Common mistake? Saying hayda with feminine nouns. Don’t worry, you’ll hear it a lot. Say both with me: هيدا كتاب… هيدي طاولة.

Nice and simple: ال — the; كتاب — book; أحمر — red. Hear that heavy H? أحمر — a7mar. It’s a deep, breathy sound from the throat, not a light h. Try to keep كتاب short — el-ktéb, like ‘kteeb’. Common mistake? Adding ‘is’ in your head. In Lebanese you just say ‘the book red’: الكتاب أحمر. Say it with me: الكتاب أحمر.

Again, slower: الكتاب… أحمر. Now naturally: الكتاب أحمر. Point to it and say it to Lili.

Asking about color is super handy: شو لونه؟ — literally, ‘what its color?’. لون is color; -ه is ‘its’ (masculine thing). You’ll also hear للشي المؤنّث ‘شو لونها؟’, but for now copy Lili’s: شو لونه؟. Answer: أزرق — azra2. Feel that catch at the end? That tiny 2 is a glottal stop. Common mistake: turning it into a long ‘k’. Keep it a little catch. Say it with me: شو لونه؟ — أزرق.

الشمس صفرا — the sun is yellow · esh-shams safra

Beautiful: الشمس — the sun; صفرا — yellow (feminine). In Lebanese, شمس is feminine, so the color also takes a feminine form: صفرا, not أصفر. Notice the ‘esh-’ sound: the L of ال assimilates into ش, so ‘esh-shams’. Common mistake? Saying الأصفر with ال — too formal here. Keep it: الشمس صفرا. Say it with me: الشمس صفرا.

Let us review all our new phrases together to make sure they stick. We started with shu-hay-da, shu hayda, meaning what is this. Then we named objects with hay-da-k-teb, hayda ktéb, for this is a book, and hay-di-taw-le, haydi tawle, meaning this is a table. We added colors with el-k-teb-ah-mar, el-ktéb a7mar, the book is red, and asked shu-lo-no, az-ra2, shu lono, azra2, what color is it, blue. Finally we practiced feminine words with esh-shams-saf-ra, esh-shams safra, meaning the sun is yellow.

That lands, doesn’t it? هيدي — haydi, feminine ‘this’; مفتاح — miftéh, ‘key’; تيتا — grandma, affectionate. Together: هيدي مفتاح تيتا. Possession is simple: noun + name. Common mistake? Saying ‘تبَع’ here — not needed. Keep it warm and simple. Say it with me: هيدي مفتاح تيتا.
