Episode 06 · Where are you from?

Last time you finally sat with Abu Naji, counted the chairs, and he pointed to your Téta Nabiha’s seat. Today, the square does what it always does to newcomers: everybody asks where you’re from. We’ll give you the words to answer — and the truest one you own yet.

أهلا وسهلا! قهوة؟ تلاتة سكّر؟ طيب… إنت جديد بالحي؟ من وين إنت؟

He just asked the question you’ll hear a hundred times this month. Let’s make it your friend. The everyday way to ask “where are you from?” to a guy is: «من وين إنت؟». To a woman: «من وين إنتي؟». Hear the soft wein — like “wain” — and the little y at the end for the feminine.

«من» is “from.” «وين» is “where.” Then «إنت» for you-masculine, and «إنتي» for you-feminine. Casual, friendly — perfect for the square. Common mistake: don’t say the school-book «من أين» here — too formal on the street. Say it with me to a guy: «من وين إنت؟». Again, a little slower: «من… وين… إنت؟». Now to a woman: «من وين إنتي؟». Natural speed: «من وين إنتي؟».

أنا من طرابلس، بس صار لي سنين هون. حيالله! إشرب قهوتك.

Time to answer the question. «أنا» is “I.” We add «من» “from,” then your country or city. For you: «أنا من كندا». Listen for that clear n in «من».

Say it with me: «أنا من كندا». Again, slower: «أنا… من… كندا». Now natural: «أنا من كندا». If you’re from a city, same pattern — «أنا من تورونتو»، «أنا من بيروت».

هاي! من وين إنت؟ كندا؟ respect! يلا catch you بعدين.

You can be “from Canada” and also… not feel from here — yet. There’s a sentence that holds that ache. Everyday, honest: «أنا مش من هون».

«مش» is our everyday “not.” «أنا مش…» = “I’m not…”. «هون» is “here.” So: «أنا مش من هون». Common mistake: saying «أنا ما من هون» — that sounds off. Use «مش». Say it with me: «أنا مش من هون». Slower: «أنا… مش… من… هون». Natural: «أنا مش من هون».

Checkpoint. You can now ask «من وين إنت؟ / من وين إنتي؟», say «أنا من كندا», and, when it’s true, «أنا مش من هون». Breathe. Sip. We’ll add one more piece — talking about where someone else is from, and a polite version for when you need it.

هاي! شو اسمَك؟ أنا مايا. عاملين جمعة صغيرة بكرا، إنت جايي؟

When you point to a woman and say where she’s from: «هيّي من بيروت». Hear the double y in «هيّي» — “hiy-yeh.” Masculine would be «هو من…».

Say it with me: «هيّي من بيروت». Slower: «هيّي… من… بيروت». Natural: «هيّي من بيروت». Common slip: don’t shorten it to «هي» here — keep that little y-sound in «هيّي».

وأنا من عين الرمانة، بس قلّن لِمايا نحنا من بيروت قلباً وقالباً! يلا خد تفاحة، عالحساب.

Sometimes you need a polite turn — with your pharmacist, a stranger, or when you want to sound extra respectful. If you ask a woman, try: «إنتي من وين، لو سمحتي؟». That «لو سمحتي» is “please, if you allow.” To a man, it’s «لو سمحت» without the y at the end.

Say it with me to a woman: «إنتي من وين، لو سمحتي؟». Slower: «إنتي… من وين… لو سمحتي؟». Natural: «إنتي من وين، لو سمحتي؟». Tip: keep the t-sound in «سمحتي» — sma7-ti — don’t drop it.

You look up the stair toward Téta Nabiha’s door. You try it again, and it feels a little less heavy: «أنا مش من هون». And a little more like an opening. That’s how it starts.

Today you asked and answered where you’re from: «من وين إنت؟ / من وين إنتي؟», «أنا من كندا», said the honest «أنا مش من هون», pointed out «هيّي من بيروت», and tried a polite «إنتي من وين، لو سمحتي؟». Tomorrow night: a potluck on the square — a new chance to say all of them again, with food.
