Before that, Abu Naji folded you in with ahla w sahla, tfaddal. Dr. Hala taught you a grown‑up polite wall with law sama7t. Today, you go solo: find the ahwe, order without pointing, and see how Abu Naji’s warmth slides from polite to teasing. Ready?
It’s mid‑morning. You lock Téta’s door, pocket the brass key, and tell yourself: no pointing today. You’re going to walk down, find the café, and order with words. Your words.

Beautiful. You asked, وين القهوة؟ and he answered, هون، تحت البيت. Say it with me: وين القهوة؟ — wein el-2ahwe? Feel that 2 in 2ahwe — it’s the Beirut stop in your throat, like a tiny catch. Nailed it. بدّي قهوة، لو سمحت — badde 2ahwe, law sama7t. badde means I want/I’d like. Very Lebanese, very spoken. قهوة — 2ahwe — with that little throat stop: 2. And لو سمحت — law sama7t — is our polite please to a man. To a woman at the counter, say لو سمحتي — law sama7ti — add that i at the end. Common mistake: saying min faDlik like fus7a or French “s’il vous plaît.” Here, law sama7t is king. Try this: say it with me… بدّي قهوة، لو سمحت.

Yes! بحبّ القهوة كتير — b7ibb el-2ahwe ktir. b7ibb: hear that 7, deep. It’s “I love/like.” In Lebanese we use it for both. el-2ahwe — our coffee with the 2 again. And كتير — ktir — means a lot/really. Register: everyday, affectionate. Common mistake: saying “ana u7ibbu” — that’s classroom fus7a, too stiff for the café. Repeat with me: بحبّ القهوة كتير.

That’s the sound of being looked after. تفضّل — tfaddal — “here you go, go ahead.” To a woman? تفضّلي — tfaddali. And صحتين — sa7tein — literally “two healths,” our way to bless your bite or sip. Classic café talk, warm and automatic. Common mistake: answering “merci” only; it’s fine, but even nicer is the Lebanese reply: على قلبك — 3a 2albak (to a man) or 3a 2albek (to a woman) — “to your heart.” Try it.

That’s the neighborhood adopting you. قهوتك عليّي، يا عيني — 2ahwtak 3aleyyé, ya 3ayné. 2ahwtak: your coffee — -tak is “your” to a man; to a woman it’s 2ahwtik. 3aleyyé: “on me.” Feel the 3 — 3ayn — it’s a deep, friendly squeeze in the throat: 3a-ley-ye. And يا عيني — ya 3ayné — literally “oh my eye,” our tender “my dear.” Register: intimate, teasing-uncle energy. Common mistake: saying “3alayya” like fus7a or “3ala ana” — nope. In Beirut: 3aleyyé.
