Ustadh Farid is the quarter's old calligrapher and bookseller, silver-bearded and ink-fingered, a reed pen never far from his hand. He teaches Sam the letters, then the ḥarakāt, then Arabic's great secret: the three-letter root that grows a whole family of words. He is the patient grandfather-teacher at the warm heart of the show.
