Why English speakers say "badde a coffee"

English orders with "I would like A coffee" — a verb plus the little article "a." Lebanese has neither, and likes flip the article rule the other way, so this lesson is a double trap.

"I want" has no verb. badde 2ahwe is literally "my-want coffee." badde behaves like a noun ("my wish"), so there is no verb to conjugate.

There is no "a." Arabic has no indefinite article at all, so never insert one: it is badde 2ahwe, never badde a 2ahwe. Adding "a" is the most common English slip here.

But likes take THE. For a general love of something, Lebanese uses the DEFINITE article: b7ibb el-2ahwe — literally "I like THE coffee" — where English drops it ("I like coffee"). Omitting the el- is the mirror error.

• badde 2ahwe, law sama7t. — I'd like a coffee, please. (no "a")
• badde may. — I want water.
• b7ibb el-2ahwe ktir. — I really like coffee. (keep the el-)

Hold the pair together: wanting a thing drops the article, liking things in general adds it.

Say it with me: badde 2ahwe… bass b7ibb el-2ahwe. No "a" when you want it, a "the" when you love it.
