Welcome back to the neighborhood! We're officially in Level One, Episode One. You've survived your first days in Téta's flat, made some friends, and even claimed your own permanent chair at Abu Naji's café.

Until now, you've been relying on fixed survival phrases. But today, we're going to open the door to actually building your own sentences. Let's see who's at the café.

You're sitting in your usual spot with a fresh coffee. Maya is walking by with her tote bag, looking like she's already mapped out her entire week. She stops when she sees you.

أهلين! كيفك؟ بتسكن وين؟

بتسكن وين؟ — Where do you live? · btiskun wein?

She knows you're new here, but she doesn't actually know exactly where your place is. Let's look at what she just asked: بتسكن وين؟

The first word is بتسكن. This means 'you live' when speaking to a male. Listen to that 't' sound right after the 'b'—that's the key to saying 'you'. Say it with me: بتسكن.

And وين؟ means 'where'. So together, it's literally 'you live where?' Try the whole question naturally: بتسكن وين؟

You need to tell her that you live right here, in Téta's old flat. How do we say 'I live above the café'?

This is the magic of Lebanese verbs! Maya said بتسكن with a 't' for 'you live'. To say 'I live', you just drop the 't' and say بسكن.

Both words start with that 'b' sound—that's how we show something is a regular, present-tense habit. I live: بسكن. Say it with me: بسكن.

Then we add the location. فوق means 'above'. And you already know the café is القهوة. Let's put it all together. I live above the café: بسكن فوق القهوة. Try it.

Maya looks genuinely surprised. She glances up at the balcony, then back at you with a small, impressed smile.

Just then, Jad strolls up, spinning a set of keys. He overhears you and decides it's time to interrogate the new neighbor.

He's wondering how you manage to just sit at the café at 10 AM. He's asking: شو بتشتغل؟

We know شو means 'what'. The verb is بتشتغل. Again, notice that 't' right after the 'b'? That means 'you work'. Try saying the verb: بتشتغل.

There's a heavy, gargling sound in the middle—that's the 'ghayn'. It's like the French 'r'. بتشتغل. Ask the full question with me: شو بتشتغل؟

Just like before! To change 'you work' to 'I work', we drop the 't'. So بتشتغل becomes بشتغل.

And where do you work? بالمدينة means 'in the city'. The 'bi' is 'in', and 'l-medéné' is 'the city'. Listen again: بشتغل بالمدينة. Now you try.

Look at you, building actual sentences! Let's lock in what we've just learned. I live above the café is بسكن فوق القهوة... بسكن فوق القهوة. And to say I work in the city, we say بشتغل بالمدينة... بشتغل بالمدينة.

And the questions that sparked this! When Maya asked where you live, she said بتسكن وين؟... بتسكن وين؟ And Jad asking what you do for work was شو بتشتغل؟... شو بتشتغل؟ Notice those 't' sounds for 'you'. Let's jump back into it.

Notice it starts with our usual 'b' prefix for 'I do something'. Then we add the word for Arabic, which starts with that deep throat sound, the '3ayn'. عربي. Say the whole phrase naturally: بتعلّم عربي.

Jad looks from Maya to you, suddenly realizing you guys have been having a full conversation without him translating.

He's testing you! He's asking بتسكن وين؟ again. Let's give him the full tour. Remember your name and where you're from?
