Scooters hum past the fountain. Rosa polishes cups inside the café. Kike sprawls on a bench scrolling music. You—Teo—hover at the doorway, practicing a shy smile.

¡Buenos días, Teo! Pasa, pasa. ¿Un cafecito?

Eh… buenos días… me llamo Teo… soy… Teo. Sí, un café, por favor.

Hear it: soy—de—Mé—xi—co. The x is like an h/s blend: Mé-ji-co/Mé-si-co depending on region; neutral: Mé-ji-co. And soy mexiCAno—stress on ca. If you’re a woman, you’d say mexicana. Repeat with me: soy de México — soy mexicano.

Third person time. To talk about someone else: ella es de… for she; él es de… for he. Hear it: e-lla (two Ls sound like y in many regions; we’ll keep a soft y), es de Co-lom-bia. Stress on lom.

And sometimes, the truest thing to say is simple and tender: no soy de aquí. It’s honest. It opens doors.

Hear it: no—soy—de—a—quí. Aquí has stress on quí. It pairs with soy de… beautifully. Common mistake: dropping de—don’t. Say it with me: no soy de aquí.
