Episode 47 · The house is your house

Welcome back to the Book Quarter. It's been a busy few days for Sam. He's reading roots on shop signs, Yasmin is dreaming up a book festival, and the neighborhood feels a little more like home every day.

This morning, the café courtyard is quiet. Sam walks over to the corner where Sitti sits every day, her prayer beads clicking gently in the morning light. He sets a fresh glass of mint tea on her small wooden table.

البَيْتُ بَيْتُك.

البَيْتُ بَيْتُك. — The house is your house. (make yourself at home) · al-BAY-tu BAY-tuk

What a beautiful welcome. Sitti just told him: البَيْتُ بَيْتُك. It literally means 'the house is your house', and it's how you tell someone to make themselves completely at home.

Remember how Sam learned that you don't need a word for 'is'? البَيْت is 'the house', and بَيْتُك is 'your house'. Set them next to each other, and you have a full sentence. البَيْتُ بَيْتُك.

اللهُ يَحْفَظُك.

This is one of the most common and beautiful blessings in Arabic. اللهُ يَحْفَظُك. God keep you, or protect you.

There are two strong sounds here. The soft, breathy ح, like fogging a mirror, and the heavy, deep ظ at the end. اللهُ يَحْفَظُك.

Let's say it together. Slowly at first: اللهُ يَحْفَظُك.

Now smoothly, as a sincere wish for someone's safety. اللهُ يَحْفَظُك.

يا حَبيبي.

يا حَبيبي. — My dear. · yaa ḥa-BEE-bee

You might know that word from love songs, but here's the secret: in Arabic, يا حَبيبي is for everyone you care about. A grandmother to a young man, friends to friends. It just means 'my dear'.

Notice the soft ح at the start. Say it with me: يا حَبيبي.

And again, full of warmth: يا حَبيبي.

Let's take a breath and gather what Sitti has given us so far. To tell someone to make themselves at home: البَيْتُ بَيْتُك. The blessing for protection: اللهُ يَحْفَظُك. And that everyday warmth for someone dear to you: يا حَبيبي.

Sam feels the weight of her kindness. He wants to reply with more than just a quick thanks. He remembers his absolute disaster from weeks ago—the difference between a dog and a heart.

شُكْرًا مِن قَلْبي.

Did you hear that? The deep ق was perfect! No dogs today. He said شُكْرًا مِن قَلْبي. Thank you, from my heart.

We know شُكْرًا for thank you. مِن means 'from'. And قَلْب is heart. Put the 'ee' on the end, and you get قَلْبي — my heart. شُكْرًا مِن قَلْبي.

Try it with me. Make sure that ق comes from the back of the throat. شُكْرًا مِن قَلْبي.

You know أَهْلًا وَسَهْلًا. Sitti just added a beautiful word: دائِمًا. It means 'always'. Welcome, always.

She looks at the book, and then she looks at Sam. She doesn't open it. Not today. But the way she holds it... she knows he is finally beginning to read the world.
