Episode 46 · Today and tomorrow

Welcome back to the Book Quarter. Last time, we saw Sam finally click with the root system—reading the family tree of الكُتُب on Farid's wall, feeling how the words for 'writer' and 'book' and 'desk' all grow from the exact same seed.

Now, he's trying to build a real life here. And that means building a routine. He's at Yasmin's café, notebook open, trying to map out his days so he actually gets his work done.

Yasmin sets a coffee down. She asks him how he's splitting his time. Sam taps his notebook, pointing to the top half of the page.

صَباحًا أَقْرَأ.

صَباحًا أَقْرَأ. — In the morning I read. · ṣa-BAA-ḥan AQ-raʾ

He's putting those root words to work! Let's look at that first part: صَباحًا means 'in the morning'. The word for morning is صَباح, and we add that little double-dash ending, which sounds like 'an', to mean 'in the morning'.

Watch the first letter—it's that heavy ص, so the word sounds deep and round. Say just the first word with me: صَباحًا. Once more: صَباحًا.

And we know أَقْرَأ from a few days ago—'I read'. Put it together. In the morning, I read. Say it with Sam: صَباحًا أَقْرَأ.

Yasmin nods. Reading in the morning is a good start. But what about the rest of the day? Sam points to the bottom half of the page.

مَساءً أَكْتُب.

Another lovely, balanced sentence. مَساءً means 'in the evening'. Notice it takes that same 'an' ending for time! The word is مَساء, evening, so to say 'in the evening', we say مَساءً.

Try it. Stretch out that middle sound. Say: مَساءً. And then his action: أَكْتُب. I write. Remember the k-t-b root! Say the whole plan with me: مَساءً أَكْتُب.

Let's pause and lock in the two halves of Sam's day. To say 'In the morning I read', we say صَباحًا أَقْرَأ.

And to say 'In the evening I write', we say مَساءً أَكْتُب. Perfect. Let's see how long this routine actually lasts.

Yasmin looks at his rigorous schedule. Read, write, read, write. She taps the table.

اليَوْمُ الجُمُعة.

اليَوْمُ الجُمُعة. — Today is Friday. · al-YAW-mul-JU-mu-ʿa

She's telling him to slow down! اليَوْم we learned before—it means 'today'. And الجُمُعة is Friday. Together: Today is Friday.

The word for Friday comes from the root j-m-ʿ, which means to gather—because it's the day of congregational prayers and gathering with family. Notice that tight throat squeeze on the ع at the end: الجُمُعة.

Say the whole phrase, flowing the words together smoothly. Say: اليَوْمُ الجُمُعة. Let's try it again: اليَوْمُ الجُمُعة.

Sam rubs his eyes. He is a little tired, honestly. He looks at his coffee, then at Yasmin.

مَتى؟

Sam asks مَتى, meaning 'when?'. And Yasmin shuts his notebook and says الآن. Now.

Notice the long 'A' sound in the middle of الآن. It's written with a wave on top called a madda, which tells us to stretch it out. Like a sigh. Try just that word. Say: الآن. Once more: الآن.

Let's do the little exchange. I'll ask when. You answer 'now'. Ready? مَتى؟ ... الآن. Great.

Yasmin leans against the doorway. She asks Sam if he really intends to sit in her cafe from dawn to dusk without a break.

كُلَّ يَوْمٍ في المَقْهى.

He loves it here. كُلَّ يَوْمٍ means 'every day'. The word كُلّ means all or every, and we pair it with يَوْم, day.

And we know في المَقْهى, at the café. Try saying just 'every day' with me, rolling the L slightly: كُلَّ يَوْمٍ.

Now put it together. I work... every day at the café. Say it with Sam: كُلَّ يَوْمٍ في المَقْهى. Perfect.

Yasmin laughs, but her attention is pulled down to her phone. She's scrolling a social feed. She stops on a bright poster.

It's an ad for a book festival—a mahrajān—happening in the modern district across the city. Big crowds, authors, money.

She looks up from her screen, her eyes drifting across the quiet square. They land on Ustadh Farid's bookshop. The beautiful, quiet, completely empty bookshop.

Remember what Hajj Mahmoud said? 'There are lots of books, and nobody buys them.' Yasmin bites her lip. She looks at Sam, then back to the shop. An idea is quietly taking root.

Before we find out what Yasmin is plotting, let's review Sam's day. To say 'In the morning I read', we say صَباحًا أَقْرَأ.

For 'In the evening I write', it's مَساءً أَكْتُب.

To say 'Today is Friday', we use اليَوْمُ الجُمُعة.

When asked 'When?', مَتى؟, the answer 'Now' is الآن.

And finally, 'Every day at the café' is كُلَّ يَوْمٍ في المَقْهى. Excellent.
