Episode 03 · Hello and Goodbye
Duration: 10:19
After this lesson you can:
Greet and take leave both formally and informally, and use the four courtesy words.
In this episode
Hungry and anxious not to seem rude, Teo makes his first round of the barrio armed only with greetings and hears the whole register spectrum in one morning — Kike's casual hola/chao, Rosa's warm buenos días, Sra. Ortega's crisp formal buenos días — his four courtesy words buying patience from strangers.
Last time, you landed in our plaza with one suitcase and a brain full of vowels. I’m Lucía, your neighbor and guide. You slept above Rosa’s café — yes, with the little accent on café — and today you’re brave enough to say hello to people. That’s it. Just… hello and goodbye. And four magic courtesy words that buy you patience.
Rosa levanta la reja del café. Huele a pan tostado. Teo baja las escaleras, nervioso y con hambre.
¡Buenos días! ¿Dormiste bien? Pasa, pasa.
buenos días / buenas tardes / buenas noches — good morning / afternoon / evening
Hear Rosa? She said buenos días — good morning. Three sisters live together in Spanish: buenos días, buenas tardes, buenas noches. Plural words, literally “good days,” “good afternoons,” “good nights.” Try the sounds with me: bweh-nos DEE-ahs; bweh-nas TAR-des; bweh-nas NO-ches. Notice the s on buenos/buenas — it matches the plural días/tardes/noches. Casual with friends, formal with a señora — these work everywhere. In the morning you say buenos días. After lunch-ish? Buenas tardes. When it’s dark? Buenas noches.
buenos días / buenas tardes / buenas noches — good morning / afternoon / evening
Say it with me: buenos días. Again, a little slower: bweh-nos… DEE-ahs. Now natural: buenos días.
buenos días / buenas tardes / buenas noches — good morning / afternoon / evening
Now the other sisters. Repeat: buenas tardes. Slower: bweh-nas TAR-des. Natural: buenas tardes. And for night: buenas noches. Slower: bweh-nas NO-ches. Natural: buenas noches. Common mistake? Don’t say buen días — keep the s: buenos días.
buenos días / buenas tardes / buenas noches — good morning / afternoon / evening
Buenos días… Rosa.
buenos días / buenas tardes / buenas noches — good morning / afternoon / evening
¡Eso! Buenos días. ¿Un café?
¡Hola, Rosa! ¿Qué hay? Oye, ¿quién es el nuevo?
hola — hi (informal)
That sweet little word is hola — hi. No h sound. The h is silent: OH-la. Super casual, friendly. Perfect with Kike, with kids, with friends. With someone very formal? You can still say hola, then add buenos días.
hola — hi (informal)
Say it with me: hola. Again, a little slower: O-la. Now natural: hola.
hola — hi (informal)
Hola.
hola — hi (informal)
Eso, bro. Tranquilo. Bienvenido al barrio.
¿Quieres un café con leche? ¿O un pan tostado?
Un… café, por favor.
por favor · gracias · de nada · perdón — please · thank you · you're welcome · sorry/excuse me
Gold stars. por favor — please. gracias — thank you. de nada — you’re welcome. perdón — sorry or excuse me. These are your social superpowers. por favor after or before what you want: Un café, por favor. Or Por favor, un café. gracias with a smile; de nada to answer thanks. And perdón to bump past or fix a tiny mistake. Sounds? por fa-VOR — feel that r; GRA-syas — the c is like s here; de NA-da — easy; per-DÓN — stress on the last syllable.
por favor · gracias · de nada · perdón — please · thank you · you're welcome · sorry/excuse me
Say it with me: por favor. Slower: por fa-vor. Natural: por favor. Now: gracias. Slower: gra-syas. Natural: gracias.
por favor · gracias · de nada · perdón — please · thank you · you're welcome · sorry/excuse me
Now: de nada. Slower: de na-da. Natural: de nada. And perdón. Slower: per-dón. Natural: perdón. Common mistake: saying perdona to a stranger can feel too familiar; perdón is safe anywhere.
por favor · gracias · de nada · perdón — please · thank you · you're welcome · sorry/excuse me
Aquí tienes tu café. Con espuma bonita, ¿eh?
Gracias.
por favor · gracias · de nada · perdón — please · thank you · you're welcome · sorry/excuse me
De nada, mi amor.
por favor · gracias · de nada · perdón — please · thank you · you're welcome · sorry/excuse me

por favor · gracias · de nada · perdón — please · thank you · you're welcome · sorry/excuse me
La clienta asiente con amabilidad y sigue su camino.
Bueno, me voy. ¡Chao!
adiós — chao — goodbye — bye (casual, from Kike)
Two ways to leave. adiós — a clear goodbye, works anywhere. chao — super casual, like “bye,” very Kike. Say ah-DYOS — feel the stress at the end. And CHAO — one quick beat. With your landlord or a teacher, adiós is safer. With friends, chao flies.
adiós — chao — goodbye — bye (casual, from Kike)
Say: adiós. Slower: a-diós. Natural: adiós. Now: chao. Slower: chao. Natural: chao.
adiós — chao — goodbye — bye (casual, from Kike)
Adiós, Rosa. Eh… chao, Kike.
adiós — chao — goodbye — bye (casual, from Kike)
¡Adiós! Y no te olvides: ¡el mejor café está aquí!
Pause and breathe. You can walk into a place with buenos días, say hola to a new friend, order with por favor, answer with gracias and de nada, and leave with adiós or chao. That’s enough to be liked. Ready to meet the rest of the block?
¡Buenos días, vecinito! Mira esas mandarinas, dulces como el sol.
buenos días / buenas tardes / buenas noches — good morning / afternoon / evening
Buenos días. Dos mandarinas, por favor.
por favor · gracias · de nada · perdón — please · thank you · you're welcome · sorry/excuse me
¡Eso! Aquí tienes. Bienvenido, muchacho.
Gracias.
por favor · gracias · de nada · perdón — please · thank you · you're welcome · sorry/excuse me
Perdón.
por favor · gracias · de nada · perdón — please · thank you · you're welcome · sorry/excuse me
¡Hasta luego, vecino!
hasta luego — see you later
Another goodbye that keeps the door open: hasta luego — see you later. Literally “until later.” Has-ta lwe-go. Friendly, everyday, works with everyone. Not as final as adiós.
hasta luego — see you later
Say it with me: hasta luego. Slower: has-ta lue-go. Natural: hasta luego.
hasta luego — see you later
Hasta luego.
hasta luego — see you later
Buenos días. ¿Usted es el nuevo inquilino de Rosa?
buenos días / buenas tardes / buenas noches — good morning / afternoon / evening
Hear the crisp buenos días again — same phrase, more formal. She also used usted — the polite “you.” You don’t need to copy usted yet; your buenos días is perfect. If you want extra polish, add señora: Buenos días, señora.
buenos días / buenas tardes / buenas noches — good morning / afternoon / evening
Buenos días, señora.
buenos días / buenas tardes / buenas noches — good morning / afternoon / evening
Muy bien. Bienvenido al edificio. Si necesita algo, pregunte.
¡Hola! Mira, mi conejo.
hola — hi (informal)
Hola, Mía. ¡Gracias!
hola — hi (informal)
El sol sube y baja entre toldos. Teo hace otra vuelta, practicando saludos con medio barrio.
Buenas tardes.
buenos días / buenas tardes / buenas noches — good morning / afternoon / evening
— Buenas tardes, vecino. —
Look at you. You’ve survived a full loop: hola to friends, buenos días with Rosa and even señora Ortega, chao with Kike, hasta luego at the market, and your four little superpowers: por favor, gracias, de nada, perdón. Let’s lock them in once more.
¿Subes a descansar? Mañana hay empanadas.
Hasta luego, Rosa. Y… gracias por hoy.
hasta luego — see you later
De nada. Buenas noches cuando duermas.
por favor · gracias · de nada · perdón — please · thank you · you're welcome · sorry/excuse me
When it’s dark, tuck in with buenas noches — good night. Want to try it at your window?
