Episode 07 · The heavy letters — س ش · ص ض · ط ظ

Welcome back to the Book Quarter. Sam arrived here seeing only a wall of shapes, but with a little help from Ustadh Farid, the wall has started to open. He's learned that letters join and break, and that the little marks above and below give them breath.

Today, Sam is feeling confident. He's wandering the souk, stringing letters together in his head. But the souk is loud, and the letters he's about to meet are even louder.

He stops at a date stall run by Hajj Mahmoud, a man who has never whispered a day in his life. He is loudly organizing wooden crates.

Sam spots a wooden label on a premium bin. He recognizes the shapes: a little row of three teeth. The first one is bare. The second one has three dots.

Let's look at those teeth. This is the letter س. It makes a light, hissing sound, just like the English s in sun. Say it with me: س.

Now, take that exact same shape and add three dots over it, and it becomes ش. The sh sound, like in ship. Try it: ش.

The bare one is س, the dotted one is ش. The dots completely change the sound. Say them both with me, slowly: س ش.

Hajj Mahmoud notices him lingering. He doesn't have time for window shoppers. He points a large finger at the premium bin.

هَذا صَيْف!

Sam jumps a little. He heard the word for summer harvest, but that didn't sound like the light, smiling س we just learned. The vowel dropped deep into Mahmoud's chest.

That's because it wasn't a س. Arabic has a set of 'heavy' or emphatic letters. You drop your jaw, raise the back of your tongue, and the vowel goes dark. The heavy brother of س is ص.

The word for summer is صَيْف. Remember the fatḥa and the silent yāʾ from Ustadh Farid's table? It's right here. Say it with me, nice and heavy: صَيْف.

If you say it with a light س, it sounds thin. The heavy ص actually changes the vowels around it, pulling them down. Listen: سار means he walked. صار means he became. Say the contrast with me: صَيْف — سار vs صار.

صَيْف! مُمْتاز!

We're navigating the heavy sounds of the souk. Let's pause and anchor what we've heard. The light, bare teeth: س. The dotted teeth: ش. The word for summer with its heavy, dark start: صَيْف. And the contrast that proves why the heaviness matters: سار versus صار.

Hajj Mahmoud is already scooping a generous kilo of the expensive summer dates into a paper cone. Sam panics slightly. He needs to explain he's just learning, just a student.

أَنا تالِب...

Hajj Mahmoud stops mid-scoop. He winces as if Sam just hit a sour note on a piano. He shakes his head firmly.

طالِب! طالِب!

Sam used the light letter ت. But the word for student uses its heavy brother, ط. It's a heavy, emphatic t. Try it with a deep, echoing voice: طالِب.

Say it slowly. Let the vowel sound deep and dark after that thick consonant. طالِب.

Hajj Mahmoud chuckles. He likes this guy. But the souk is getting busy. The sun is high.

الآن ظُهْر.

Noon. ظُهْر. That brings us to our last heavy letter. Take that heavy ط, add a dot, and you get ظ. It's the heavy, buzzing brother of the English 'th' in 'this'.

Say both heavy words with me, thick and resonant: طالِب · ظُهْر.

The cone of premium dates is heavy. Sam digs into his pockets. He pulls out a few small coins, nowhere near enough.

Mahmoud looks at the coins, then at Sam. He doesn't take the money. Instead, he reaches for a small black slate sitting at his elbow, picks up a piece of chalk, and makes a single, firm mark.

لِطالِب.
