Episode 30 · Murájaʿa: At Nour's house

Welcome back to the Book Quarter. It's been quite a journey for Sam since he first arrived, mixing up his heart and his dog.

He's been building a life here one word at a time. Lately, seven-year-old Nour has taken it upon herself to show him around, stacking up all the 'this of that' and 'my and your' pieces they've been learning.

Today is a breather. A quiet afternoon. And Nour has invited her fellow beginner over to her house for tea.

هٰذا بابُ بَيْتي.

هٰذا بابُ بَيْتي. — This is the door of my house. · HAA-dhaa BAA-bu BAY-tee

What a grand entrance! Nour is combining a few things we've learned into one smooth sentence. She says: هٰذا بابُ بَيْتي.

Remember how we link two words together to say 'the door of the house'? Well, here, the house is hers. So 'my house' gets that little 'ee' sound at the end. بَيْتي.

Let's try the whole phrase. Listen closely and repeat: هٰذا بابُ بَيْتي.

Nour isn't finished with the tour. She digs into her pocket and pulls out a tiny, slightly bent brass key on a colorful woven string.

She says: مِفْتاحُ البابِ صَغير. The key of the door is small.

We are describing an object of an object again. The key of the door. And then we just drop the adjective on the end to describe the key. صَغير. Small.

Watch out for the two tricky throat sounds here. The breathy 'h' sound at the end of the key, like fogging a mirror, and the deep 'gh' in small, like a gargle. Try it with me: مِفْتاحُ البابِ صَغير.

Let's pause and lock in what we've seen at the threshold.

First, Nour pointed out her front door: هٰذا بابُ بَيْتي. هٰذا بابُ بَيْتي. This is the door of my house.

Then, she showed off the surprisingly tiny key for it: مِفْتاحُ البابِ صَغير. مِفْتاحُ البابِ صَغير. The key of the door is small.

Against all odds, the tiny key turns the heavy lock. They step inside. The courtyard is cool and smells faintly of jasmine and cardamom.

Nour immediately drags Sam down a short hallway to point into her bedroom. It's an explosion of colorful drawings, wooden blocks, and books.

غُرْفَتُها جَميلة.

Sam smiles. He just said: غُرْفَتُها جَميلة.

We know the word for room. But to say 'her room', we attach the little tail for a female owner. غُرْفَتُها. And then he describes it as beautiful, matching the feminine word.

Try it with me. Roll that 'r' gently at the beginning: غُرْفَتُها جَميلة.

Sam is hovering awkwardly in the hallway, trying not to step on a particularly nice woven rug with his dusty shoes.

From the kitchen archway, Umm Nadia emerges carrying a brass tray with two small glasses of mint tea. She sees his hesitation.

البَيْتُ بَيْتُكَ.

البَيْتُ بَيْتُكَ. — The house is your house. (make yourself at home) · al-BAY-tu BAY-tu-ka

This is one of the most beautiful phrases you'll hear in Arabic. Literally, she is saying: البَيْتُ بَيْتُكَ. The house is your house.

البَيْتُ بَيْتُكَ. — The house is your house. (make yourself at home) · al-BAY-tu BAY-tu-ka

It means 'make yourself at home.' You are family here. Notice the tail she adds to the second house: that 'ka' sound means 'your' when speaking to a male.

Say it with me, and feel the warmth in it: البَيْتُ بَيْتُكَ.

Sam lets out a breath, steps off the edge of the rug, and sits down on the low cushion. The tea is hot, and for the first time in a long time, he feels like he belongs somewhere.
