Episode 25 · Murájaʿa: A morning at the café

Welcome back to the Book Quarter. Over the last four episodes, Sam has stepped out of his beginner alphabet bubble and into the real world. He's learned to greet, to introduce himself, and most importantly, to tell the difference between 'he-words' and 'she-words'.

Today is a breather. A chance to just sit, have a coffee, and realize how much he actually knows.

Inside the café, Umm Nadia is already wiping down the counter. She sees Sam approach and, without a single word, slides a steaming copper cup onto the usual tray. He's officially a regular.

صَباحُ الخَيْر! كَيْفَ الحال؟

صَباحُ الخَيْر! كَيْفَ الحال؟ — Good morning! How are you? · ṣa-BAA-ḥul-KHAYR! KAY-fal-ḤAAL

A perfect, polite morning greeting. He says: صَباحُ الخَيْر! كَيْفَ الحال؟

صَباحُ الخَيْر! كَيْفَ الحال؟ — Good morning! How are you? · ṣa-BAA-ḥul-KHAYR! KAY-fal-ḤAAL

Let's break that down. First, good morning. صَباحُ الخَيْر. Literally, the morning of goodness. Feel that soft breathy catch on the ح in صَباح, and the raspy خ in خَيْر. Say it with me: صَباحُ الخَيْر.

صَباحُ الخَيْر! كَيْفَ الحال؟ — Good morning! How are you? · ṣa-BAA-ḥul-KHAYR! KAY-fal-ḤAAL

Then, how are you? كَيْفَ الحال؟ Literally, how is the condition? It's standard, polite, and works for absolutely anyone. Try the whole thing naturally: صَباحُ الخَيْر! كَيْفَ الحال؟

صَباحُ الخَيْر! كَيْفَ الحال؟ — Good morning! How are you? · ṣa-BAA-ḥul-KHAYR! KAY-fal-ḤAAL

صَباحُ النّور! بِخَيْر، شُكْراً.

She answered 'morning of light' and that she is 'with goodness'. Sam takes his tray to the quiet corner table. He sits down, arranging his two prized possessions.

هٰذِهِ قَهْوة، وَهٰذا كِتاب.

هٰذِهِ قَهْوة، وَهٰذا كِتاب. — This is a coffee, and this is a book. · HAA-dhi-hi QAH-wa, wa-HAA-dhaa ki-TAAB

He's practicing his pointing words! He says: هٰذِهِ قَهْوة، وَهٰذا كِتاب.

هٰذِهِ قَهْوة، وَهٰذا كِتاب. — This is a coffee, and this is a book. · HAA-dhi-hi QAH-wa, wa-HAA-dhaa ki-TAAB

Remember from our earlier lesson: coffee, قَهْوة, has that little round feminine ending. So it needs the feminine 'this'. هٰذِهِ قَهْوة. Say that part: هٰذِهِ قَهْوة.

هٰذِهِ قَهْوة، وَهٰذا كِتاب. — This is a coffee, and this is a book. · HAA-dhi-hi QAH-wa, wa-HAA-dhaa ki-TAAB

But the book, كِتاب, doesn't have that ending. It's a he-word. So it uses the masculine 'this'. هٰذا كِتاب. Let's say the whole sentence, connecting them with وَ for 'and': هٰذِهِ قَهْوة، وَهٰذا كِتاب.

هٰذِهِ قَهْوة، وَهٰذا كِتاب. — This is a coffee, and this is a book. · HAA-dhi-hi QAH-wa, wa-HAA-dhaa ki-TAAB

Let's pause and review what we've practiced this morning. He greeted Umm Nadia with: صَباحُ الخَيْر! كَيْفَ الحال؟ And again: صَباحُ الخَيْر! كَيْفَ الحال؟ Meaning: Good morning! How are you? Then he named his things: هٰذِهِ قَهْوة، وَهٰذا كِتاب. Once more: هٰذِهِ قَهْوة، وَهٰذا كِتاب. Meaning: This is a coffee, and this is a book.

Sam reaches out to take his very first sip of the morning, grabbing the copper cup a little too eagerly.

آخ! القَهْوةُ ساخِنة.

القَهْوةُ ساخِنة. — The coffee is hot. · al-QAH-wa-tu SAA-khi-na

Fresh off the stove! He just said: القَهْوةُ ساخِنة.

القَهْوةُ ساخِنة. — The coffee is hot. · al-QAH-wa-tu SAA-khi-na

This is a perfect, simple descriptive sentence. First we have the coffee: القَهْوةُ. Then the word for hot: ساخِنة.

القَهْوةُ ساخِنة. — The coffee is hot. · al-QAH-wa-tu SAA-khi-na

Notice the endings! Because coffee is a she-word, the adjective for hot has to match it. It gets the feminine ending too. ساخِنة. Say it with me, feeling that raspy خ sound: القَهْوةُ ساخِنة.

القَهْوةُ ساخِنة. — The coffee is hot. · al-QAH-wa-tu SAA-khi-na

Suddenly, the peace of the morning is broken. Seven-year-old Nour comes tearing into the café, heading straight for the pastry display.

البِنْتُ صَغيرة.

البِنْتُ صَغيرة. — The girl is small. · al-BIN-tu ṣa-GHEE-ra

He's narrating his life now. He just said: البِنْتُ صَغيرة.

البِنْتُ صَغيرة. — The girl is small. · al-BIN-tu ṣa-GHEE-ra

البِنْتُ means the girl. And صَغيرة means small. Just like the hot coffee, the adjective has to match. Since a girl is obviously feminine, small becomes صَغيرة.

البِنْتُ صَغيرة. — The girl is small. · al-BIN-tu ṣa-GHEE-ra

Watch out for that tricky غ in صَغيرة. It's a deep gargle, like you're rinsing your throat. صَغيرة. Say the whole sentence with me: البِنْتُ صَغيرة.

البِنْتُ صَغيرة. — The girl is small. · al-BIN-tu ṣa-GHEE-ra

Nour hears him. She freezes with a date cookie halfway to her mouth, turns, and marches over to Sam's table.

وَالرَّجُل؟

She just asked 'And the man?'. She's testing him. Sam looks at his book, looks at Nour, and takes a slow breath.

الرَّجُلُ كَبير.

He remembered the opposite! 'The man is big.' Nour narrows her eyes, gives a tiny, respectful nod, and takes a bite of her cookie. He passed.

Umm Nadia chuckles from behind the counter. Sam smiles, finally taking a careful sip of his coffee. He's not just a tourist trying to read signs anymore. He belongs here.

What a perfect morning. Let's review the phrases that made it happen. The greeting: صَباحُ الخَيْر! كَيْفَ الحال؟ Once more: صَباحُ الخَيْر! كَيْفَ الحال؟ Meaning: Good morning! How are you? And again: القَهْوةُ ساخِنة. Meaning: The coffee is hot. And he described Nour: البِنْتُ صَغيرة. Once more: البِنْتُ صَغيرة. Meaning: The girl is small.
