Episode 21 · Hello and welcome

In Level Zero, Sam cracked the code. He learned the shapes, the roots, the vowels. He can read the signs above the doors.

But reading the word for 'door' doesn't help you walk through it. Welcome to Level One. It's time to start talking.

It's Sam's first real morning as a resident of the Book Quarter. He knows the letters for hello, but he's never actually had to look someone in the eye and say it out loud.

You saw those letters on the board last season, but hearing it is different. مَرْحَبًا is a friendly, everyday hello. Listen to that soft, breathy ح in the middle.

مَرْحَبًا! أَهْلًا وَسَهْلًا. — Hello! Welcome. · MAR-ḥa-ban! AH-lan wa-SAH-lan

And أَهْلًا وَسَهْلًا is the classic welcome. It literally means you've found family and an easy place. Say it with me: مَرْحَبًا! أَهْلًا وَسَهْلًا.

مَرْحَبًا! أَهْلًا وَسَهْلًا. — Hello! Welcome. · MAR-ḥa-ban! AH-lan wa-SAH-lan

Just then, Hajj Mahmoud strolls in. He's an older gentleman, and he uses the most universal, slightly formal greeting in the Arabic-speaking world.

السَّلامُ عَلَيْكُم. — Peace be upon you. (formal, universal) · as-sa-LAA-mu ʿa-LAY-kum

Literally, 'Peace be upon you'. You will hear this everywhere—entering a shop, joining a meeting, passing someone on the street. Try saying it slowly: السَّلامُ عَلَيْكُم.

السَّلامُ عَلَيْكُم. — Peace be upon you. (formal, universal) · as-sa-LAA-mu ʿa-LAY-kum

Sam was about to say it back exactly the same way, but Arabic loves a mirror. The reply flips it around: 'And upon you, peace.'

وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّلام. — And upon you, peace. (the reply) · wa-ʿa-LAY-ku-mus-sa-LAAM

Notice the و at the start? That means 'and'. Say the reply with me: وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّلام.

You've already got three essential ways to start a conversation. Let's lock them in. The friendly hello and welcome: مَرْحَبًا! أَهْلًا وَسَهْلًا. Again: مَرْحَبًا! أَهْلًا وَسَهْلًا. Hello! Welcome.

The universal formal greeting: السَّلامُ عَلَيْكُم. Once more: السَّلامُ عَلَيْكُم. Peace be upon you. And the mirrored reply: وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّلام. Again: وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّلام. And upon you, peace.

Umm Nadia approaches Sam's table. She sets down a tiny cup, the dark coffee steaming.

Good morning. Listen to the heavy ص at the beginning of صَباح, and that throat-clearing خ in الخَيْر. Say it with me, nice and full: صَباحُ الخَيْر.

صَباحُ الخَيْر. — Good morning. · ṣa-BAA-ḥul-KHAYR

Ah, the first real question! كَيْفَ الحال؟ Literally, 'How is the state' or 'How is the condition'. It's how you ask someone how they're doing.

كَيْفَ الحال؟ — How are you? · KAY-fal-ḤAAL

Say the question with me: كَيْفَ الحال؟

كَيْفَ الحال؟ — How are you? · KAY-fal-ḤAAL

Sam realizes he has absolutely no idea how to say 'I am fine'. He knows how to read the library sign, but he's stuck on 'good'.

Sam decides to retreat to safe territory. He holds up the coffee cup with a grateful nod to Umm Nadia, saying, "شُكْرًا" (Shukran).

Umm Nadia laughs softly, waving a hand dismissively as she says "عَفْوًا" (Afwan) and heads back to the stove.

He fumbled the small talk, but he survived his first real morning. He spoke. And the neighborhood spoke back.

Let's review the five ways you learned to break the ice today. The warm hello and welcome: مَرْحَبًا! أَهْلًا وَسَهْلًا. Twice: مَرْحَبًا! أَهْلًا وَسَهْلًا. Hello! Welcome.

The formal, universal greeting: السَّلامُ عَلَيْكُم. Again: السَّلامُ عَلَيْكُم. Peace be upon you. And its mirror reply: وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّلام. Once more: وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّلام. And upon you, peace.

Good morning: صَباحُ الخَيْر. Again: صَباحُ الخَيْر. Good morning. And finally, the question Sam couldn't answer: كَيْفَ الحال؟ Once more: كَيْفَ الحال؟ How are you?
